Henderson Wave

Alight in Telok Blangah MRT, cross the overpass and go straight to your right side when you are facing the HDBs. If you are going to take a bus, (kindly check the information as I did not check what bus number you are going to take because we walk from bus stop to the foot of the park), there are only two bus stops away and you can see the bridge of Henderson. Go up and from there you can explore the parks.

Henderson wave is also good to look at night because of the led light.  We will go there next time for a night shoot.

We start our journey in Forest Walk.

Malacca

Malacca is the third smallest estate in Malaysia.  It was one of UNESCO’s world heritage lists.  It was conquered by the Portuguese in 1511 that is why you can see a lot of Catholic Churches there.

From Singapore to Malacca, you can book a bus online at www.busonlineticket.com.  If possible, call the bus liner where are they going to pass, Tuas or Johor Bahru.  Tuas to Malacca will take to almost 7 hours ride but if they will pass through Johor, it will only take to almost 4 hours.

In Malacca, you can go to Jonker Walk.  Jonker walk is most lively at night.  They will close the road to make it become a night market.  You can buy a lot of cheap items here, from accessories to imitations to food.  There are also bar and restaurants around.

From this place, you can go anywhere.  All the famous spots are just beyond the corner.  A one day tour in Malacca is enough.  Fixed-no-meter-rate of taxi is MYR15.00, so if they will ask you for MRY20.00, bargain it to MYR15.00.  You are very lucky if you can find a taxi that will use their meter.

Day 10: Home sweet home (March 4, 2012)

I booked a joint van at the travel and tours beside the hotel to take me to the airport. It costs me THB180 (USD5.90). My flight going back to Singapore was 10AM but the schedule of the van to fetch me from the hotel was 7AM because they are still going to some hotel to fetch some passengers too.

At 8:30AM we are already in the highway and the driver was driving fast they the van was almost flying. The couple who sat beside the driver murmured something. I was sitting at the middle of the van. The husband who sat beside the driver told him to slow down but then the driver did not listen and never pay attention to the man. The man said we don’t want to die and we are not in hurry because it is still a bit early so slow down but still the driver did not pay attention to him. The man got irritated that he shouted at the ear of the driver in broken words. “D-id you he-ar me! I said s-l-o-w down!” To my amazement, yes, I was amaze by the calmness of the driver, he only looked at the man and continue driving like we are going to hell. Then the man burst out and said: “F—k you!” That was the time that I was scared. I was scared with the possibility that the driver will do. We are not in our country, we are in his country. Then the driver took out his hand over the steering wheel and unfastens his seat belt and said in an angry voice (and imagine that the van was still running and his hand was not in the steering wheel anymore), “what did you say?”

I was glad that the man beside me talks to the driver and he said to relax. He also said to the husband to calm down because the driver is only trying to take us to the airport on time. And he even said that the driver is doing his best and he is a good driver. The driver then slows down a bit and we arrive in the airport safely on time. I read that the driver will really drive fast because they still need to take other passengers to the airport and it’s their way of living. The more passengers they can take to the airport, the higher commission they can get.

So, that was my ten day adventure of traveling alone.  My friends asked me, “Would you do it again?”  My answer?  ABSOLUTELY!

Day 9: Elephant Trekking with mountain view and Bangla Road (March 3, 2012)

I took the Elephant trekking and it costs me THB1,450 (USD47.56).  They fetch me in the hotel by jeep safari.  There was a show for a few minutes for the baby elephants and you can feed them by buying fruit in a basket for THB100 (3.28).

They also let the elephant draw by guiding the trunk of the elephant to draw letter M and eventually, the elephant will continue drawing.

After the show, we will wait for the mammoth elephant to trek us to the mountain for 45 minutes.  I took some picture while waiting for the mammoth.

The mammoths are coming.

After the trek, they brought us back to our respective hotel.  I ordered shrimp and vegetable tempura for lunch in the hotel and that costs me THB160 including pepsi (USD5.25).

vegetable and shrimp tempura

After I took my lunch, I took a nap and at around 5PM, I went to the beach to find a place who can do a hair braid.  I approached one old lady and ask where I can do my hair braid.  She said she can do it but I should be there at an earlier time because it will take for her for 2 hours to braid my hair.  Then she told me she can bring me to a saloon.  She was so nice that she brought me there and even negotiated with the lady inside, which I am not sure if she has a commission.  They ask me THB1000 but I deal with THB700 (USD22.96).

It was finished at 7PM and sadly I wasn’t able to take the sunset in Patong Beach.  I only took when the sun was already gone.

At around 11PM, I and my new-found Thai and Filipino friend who works in a Spa near the hotel went out.  They brought me to Bangla Road which is only 10 minutes walk from the hotel.  This is what you can see in Bangla road.

They will close the road at night for the party.  It is where most lively at night.  You can see everything from hot ladies to hot lady-boys.

Day 8: Phi Phi and Bamboo Island Tour (March 2, 2012)

This tour costs me THB2,200 (USD72.15).  It takes one hour ride from Phuket to Phi Phi Island.  I don’t remember the name of the islands we went to but here are some of the pictures I have taken.

You can feed the fish with a bread:

You can swim with the fish, too.

When I reach to the hotel, the staff told me to shift to the fifth floor because the room which I stayed in the second floor is not my actual room.  I agreed and this is the view of the room.

What I don’t like in this room is that there are mosquitoes and one night while I was about to sleep, the bed shake.  I thought I was being exorcised but I realized that the room was shaky when there’s a big truck passing down the road.

Day 7: Krabi 4 Islands Tour by Express Boat and Phuket Simon Cabaret (March 1, 2012)

This tour costs me THB1,800 (USD59.06) and THB800 (USD26.25) for Phuket Simon Cabaret Show. I have made all the booking in the website I have given in the previous posts.

The first stop of the tour is in Railey Beach, they will just drop some of the passengers and then go to Ao Nang Beach.

Day 6: Phuket to Patong Bay, Phuket Fantasea Show (February 29, 2012)

We arrived in Phuket Terminal at 8:30AM.  At around 7:30AM, the staff gives us a wet wipes to wipe-out our oily faces.  The taxis in the bus terminal charged me 500Baht (USD16.52) to send me to Patong.  I decided to take a bus.  From the bus terminal, walk to the main road and you can see a 7 Eleven and cross the road.  They have a pink color bus stop and wait for the blue color bus in which you can read in big letter PHUKET-PATONG.  Wave the driver to let them stop.  The fare is only 25Baht (USD0.83).  Do not ask the driver how much is the fare because he took me 40Baht (USD1.32) but I found out it’s only 25Baht because there’s a lady conductor that will ride after a few minutes.  There’s no conductor when I ride the bus, only after a few minutes when it stopped in one of the shop.

I arrived in Patong Bay Inn where I stayed at 11:00AM because the bus stopped for a few minutes to pick up passengers and the travel time is 45 minutes.  When I arrived, the staff let me check in early.  By the way, in Patong, they call the motorcyle as taxi.  You can let them take to your hotel if you don’t know exactly the address.  Bargain nicely.  I paid the taxi (motorcycle) driver for 40Baht (I did not bargain anymore, hehehe) (USD1.30) for a five minutes ride because I never knew that I am already near.  Anyway, I’m already tired so I don’t mind.

My room:

At 5:25PM, the van which I booked in advanced for Phuket Fantasea Show picked me up.  You can visit http://www.phuketthailand-travel.com for any activities you want and you can even asked a discount.  They give me 10% because I booked five activities.

Phuket Fantasea Show is an elephant show.  Elephant show only start before the end of the show, the first show is the history of Thailand which is also good and they even have chicken show which is so cute and goat show.  It’s boring in the middle but it’s okay to experience it.

This is what you can see in the compound.  Cameras, cell phones are not allowed during the show.  They have baggage outside to keep your belongings.  Don’t worry, it’s safe.

Phuket Fantasea Show

You can even take a picture inside the shop.

There are two time slots of the show.  One is in 7:30PM and the other one is 9:00PM.  If you will get the 7:30PM schedule, you have to take your dinner after the show.  If you booked the 9:00PM show, you have to take your dinner first.  The activity has a free dinner but you have to choose buffet dinner or seafood dinner.  Seafood dinner has an additional charge.  I booked seafood dinner and it’s so delicious!

You have to go inside the Golden Kinnaree for your dinner.

Day 5: Bangkok, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Pratunam (February 28, 2012)

I woke up 5:30 in the morning to catch the 6AM bus to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Taxi from Sansen (the address of the hotel where I stayed) to Southern Bus Terminal cost me 43Baht (USD1.41). If you are going to Southern Bus Terminal, some drivers don’t understand English, so tell them you are going to “Sai Thai”. This is what Auntie (owner of Roof View Hotel) kept on repeating to me. She then gave me a note to give to the driver in Thai language.

We arrived in the station at 6:15, there’s no bus yet (or it already leave) so I decided to buy a ticket going to Phuket for a night’s trip. Southern Bus Terminal has six bus schedules going to Phuket from Bangkok. The bus that I chose will leave at 8:00PM tonight, a VIP bus which cost me 974Baht (USD32.02).

After I booked a ticket, I went back to the bus station and just on time, the bus no. 78 going to Damnoen Saduak came. We left the station at 6:30 and arrived in the floating market at 8:45AM. So, that’s 2 hours and 15 minutes ride. There’s not much tourist at this time. Tourist will arrive around 9:00AM. The last stop of the bus is the floating market so no need to worry, bus fare is 64Baht (USD2.10). The lady conductor brought me to the table where you will pay for a boat going to the floating market. The in-charge charged me 800Baht (USD26.30) since I am the only one.

I turned around ready to take a walk when the lady staff approached me with a calculator on her hand. She told me she can give it to me at 500Baht (USD16.44). I told her it’s okay, I’ll just walk (but I’m not sure if I can walk inside). Then she told me that I cannot walk inside, I need to take a boat to be able to go there. She asked me how much I can pay. I told her 200Baht (USD6.57). She said no, she can give me at 400Baht. Then my final and firm reply, 300Baht (USD9.86), that’s all I can pay. She sighed and said ok. The whole boat is mine; it allowed me to view the market for 40 minutes. This is what you can see in Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

Forty minutes is done and we are on our way back when the salesboy of the spices, (yes, I bought saffron for only 250Baht (USD12.91) which the original price was 500Baht (USD16.44), recognizes me and shouted, “Miss Philippine!” He knows I’m from Philippines because he asked where I came from when I bought the saffron. Some Thai cannot pronounce the “s” in the last word so “Philippines” became “Philippine”. He then acted as if ready to fight and yell, “I love Pacquiao!”. I gave him two thumbs up and a big smile which leaves the tourist in the other boat all smile and staring at me.

Spices in Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

I leave Damnoen Saduak at 10:00AM and bus of tourist came pouring in. If you will go to Damnoen Saduak by bus, going back to take a bus is a bit tricky. You have to get out where the bus leaves you, walk to your left side until you see the overpass highway. You will see a stairs and you have to go up, then go down to the other side and walk a bit. Cross the road, walk past below the overpass and you can wait the bus taking you back to Bangkok. The fare is the same.

We arrived in Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok at 1:00PM because there was a bit of traffic and stopping of the bus. From SBT, I crossed the road by overpass and took a cab to take me to the Grand Palace. Remember that some Thai cannot speak “s”, Grand Palace became a “Grand Palath” and that leaves me a smile. Taxi cost me 47Baht (USD1.55).

Entrance to the Grand Palace is 400Baht (USD13.15) but its worth it.

The Grand Palace

The hermit doctor

The palace will close at 3:00PM. If you buy ticket at 3:00, they will still allow you to come in, but they will close some of the palaces, which you cannot go inside anymore. They will not refund your money.

One of the taxis (which some called it “Tuktuk” in Bangkok):

Tuktuk

After at the Grand Palace, I went to Pratunam at 4:00PM. Taxi cost me 69Baht (USD2.27). When you take a taxi from Grand Palace to some other places, walk a bit far because taxis parked in the Grand Palace won’t use a meter and give you a high price.
Pratunam is known as the wholesale market in Bangkok. Vendors are everywhere and you can make a good bargain. Please bargain nicely and smile while bargaining them. I always do this and it was a smooth bargain.

I leave in Pratunam at 6:00PM, went back to the hotel to get my belongings (I checked out early when I went to Damnoen and leave my belongings at the counter at no cost), get back to the taxi and went to SBT for the bus going to Phuket. It was so traffic that we arrived in SBT at 8:00PM and taxi cost me 219Baht (USD7.20). I’m glad still there; waiting for the passengers who did not arrived yet. The bus leaves Bangkok to Phuket at 8:10PM. The staff gives us a bottle of water, a bun, peanut and a juice. An hour later, they provided us a blanket.

Day 4: Bangkok and the birthday girl (February 27, 2012)

9:00 AM

I’m very excited to see Bangkok for the first time.  Then, there was this Auntie who sat beside me, talking in Thai language of the person who sleeps in the upper berth.  I asked her if we are still far (though I know that we will arrive at 11:25AM as per the ticket arrival schedule). She told me in fluent English:

Auntie:  We will arrive there at around 4PM

Me:  We will arrive there at 4PM?  (Yes, I heard her but then I do parroting).
Auntie: Yes, 4PM, that’s seven hours from now.
Me: (with insisting voice.) But Auntie, my ticket time of arrival is 11:25AM.  How can that be?
Auntie: (Patiently explained to me in a soft voice).  Remember Hat Yai?
Me: (Nodded) Yes.

Auntie: (As if she’s teaching me a lesson with matching action of her hands).  We should leave there at 8PM but the train was delayed in Butterworth.

Me:  (Confused and don’t want to hear about the 30 minutes delayed in Butterworth versus the 5 hours delayed).  But why we leave at 12 midnight in Hat Yai?

Auntie: Because they repair the other coach because the air-con is not working.  We are so lucky that our air-conditioner is working.

Well, it’s as if that I’m complaining but well, yes, I am.  That explains why the other coach is very hot.  There are two train coaches.  The other one which I am in is the second class sleeper and I’m not sure what class is the other coach.

Today is my 32nd birthday and I told my colleague that I will treat one passenger but the problem is, I don’t have a Baht yet but I have Malaysian Ringgit and Singapore dollar with me.  The waiter approached me if I want a breakfast.  I asked him if he accept Ringgit and of course, he said no.  But he told me that one of the train staff can change for me.  Sure, the rate was low but I only change my ringgit just to have a breakfast and a treat to Mr. Hang (the name of the person in the upper berth).  I ordered my egg, toasted bread, coffee and pineapple for 104Baht (USD3.42).  Mr. Hang refused to order because he is a Muslim so I told him just even coffee.  I signalled him that I will be the one to pay and he smiled and nodded (wait, did he understand me?).  Well, a cup of coffee save’s me my money.  When the waiter asked for the payment, I took out my money as well as Mr. Hang.  I told the waiter not to accept his money because I will be the one to pay and Mr. Hang talked to him in Thai (which I don’t understand, of course), and Mr. Hang give me a stop signal and the waiter told me not to worry because Mr. Hang is a rich man (well, he doesn’t looked like one).  I smiled by the joke of the waiter which I thought it was but I was ashamed inside.

Auntie sat beside us again and they talked in their own language and I busied myself looking outside the window.  After they talked, Auntie touched my knee and started sharing me with their conversation:

Auntie:  (touching my knee and speak in a soothing voice).  “We talked about his life.  He said he is not educated because his father doesn’t let him go to school.  (That made my heart sink in shame for letting him pay my bill).  He didn’t want to leave school so he’s sold some of the harvest in their farm so that he could buy food and have money for school.  Then he graduated high school and his father gave him money to have his own business.  He always wants to do buy and sell of used car but people cheated him.  He paid the car but didn’t receive any car.  He went home again and broke.  His father believed in him and again gave money.  He was already smart, learned from his mistakes and now he has a shop in Bangkok and owns rubber and durian plantation.”

Well, I just met a down-to-earth millionaire in this journey.

4:30 PM

At last we arrived in Bangkok.  I took a taxi to Roof View Hotel which I will stay for a night.  Taxi costs me 80Baht (USD2.63) and hotel costs me SGD28.10 (USD22.36).  It was a good location.  I just walked from the hotel to Kao San Road for twenty minutes.  Kao San road is famous for after-dark shopping.

people on the go at Kao San road

food street at Kao San road

There are restaurants here, clothing, sidewalk vendors and everything you are looking for.

As I walked down the road, I saw a market vendor closing her display.  She has a crocs-like sandal so I asked how much.  She saw me the placard of 159Baht (USD5.22).  I asked her if there is a discount, she then showed me another placard of 139Baht (USD4.56).  My mind was racing how many placards she will show me if I kept on asking for a discount.  I asked again and now she said how much do I want.  It gives me a good deal so I said 100Baht (USD3.28).  She said no and gives it to me at 120Baht.  Keeping my bargain, I told her that I will take a walk first but suddenly she grabbed my arm and I closed the deal of 100Baht.

So, if you don’t want to get into trouble, don’t ask!

Day 3: Batu Firringhi to Butterworth (February 26, 2012)

I woke up at around 7AM, took a cup of tea, and took my camera and head down to the beach.  It was a beautiful morning.

At around 8:15AM, I sat down at Feringgi Wave Cafe to order my breakfast.  I asked the waiter if the black pepper fish in the menu has rice and she said yes so I ordered one.

Feringgi Wave Cafe

Fifteen minutes later, another waiter approached me and put down my order, coffee and black pepper fish.  There was no rice so I asked:

Me:  Where is the rice?

Waiter: Oh, the rice is different.  You have to order it separately.

Me:  Okay, give me one rice.

Ten minutes later (yes, 10 minutes of waiting rice).

Waiter:  Here’s your order Ma’am.

Me: (Shocked because he gave me a set of fried rice).  You don’t have plain rice?  (The couple who sat on the other table looked at me).

Waiter:  No Ma’am.  Everything is set.

Me: (Sighing). Okay, give me that.

The fried rice was salty so I did not finish it.  I asked the waiter to pack the remaining food.  (So that I have a lunch in the train).  The food costs me MYR17.50 (USD5.82).  I also noticed they did not wash the glass well.  It has a stained of coffee in the lip glass.

I checked out at the guesthouse at 10AM and took bus 101 going to the Jetty.  Only bus 101 will be going to the jetty for Butterworth and it is the last stop.  The ride was 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Take note, if the person you asked how many minutes to take you to your destination, add 30 minutes in it.  Yes, I asked two people I meet in Batu Firringhi and they both said the travel is around 40-45 minutes but it is not.  They did not include the traffic and the stops of the bus.  The fare costs me MYR2.70 (USD0.90).  I waited in the jetty for 15 minutes before it leave for Butterworth.  PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FROM PENANG TO BUTTERWORTH.  They clearly posted there: FREE CROSSING FROM PENANG TO BUTTERWORTH.  You only need to pay for a few ringgits from Butterworth to Penang.

We arrived at Butterworth Terminal at 11:50AM, that’s 20 minutes ride of the jetty.  Follow the sign where you are going and if you cannot read the sign, ask because I did not follow it.  I followed the people going to the bus station while the railway is on the other side so I need to go back.  I arrived at the station at 12:05 noon and pay my reservation ticket.  You cannot book the train but you can reserve a seat one month in advance and pay in the station.  You don’t have to pay online.  Visit www.ktmb.com.my for further train information.

We waited 3 hours because the train arrived at 2:50PM but in the information provided, it will leave at 2:20PM, so that already 30 minutes delayed.  I reserved 2nd class sleeper train, in lower deck and nobody stayed in the upper deck, yet.  The lower deck formed as a seat, not a bed so I wonder how to assemble this one into a bed.  I have all the freedom to hang my feet on the other side as no one sits with me.  Few minutes later, the train stopped and lots of passenger with different languages came in.  I was like, “Oh, how would we sleep when passengers came pouring in?”  It was when I realized that the train is a normal train at daytime and a sleeper coach at night.  I wonder if it is also the same in the 1st class coach.  Second class sleeper cost me MYR112 (USD37.24), and I wonder what time the train captain let us sleep…

5:45PM – The train stops to another station and some passengers went out and some came in.  Four persons approached me and claiming my seat as their seat.

NOTICE THE NUMBERING OF THE TRAIN.  There are two face-to-face seats and each seat has a number:

Seat A:  15 Upper berth   Upper number 29 as Aisle seat and lower number 30 window seat.

Seat B:  16 Lower berth  Upper number 31 as Aisle seat and lower number 32 window seat.

These persons thought that these are their seat because of the number.  Their numbers are 29, 30, 31, and 32.  So I stood up and approached the train staff about the number and he guides the four persons away from me to their respective seat.  If you are traveling in the sleeper coach, your number will be in the upper or lower berth.  Disregard the isle seat and the window seat.  It will shows in your ticket anyway.

Traveling by train is good.  You’ve meet a lot of people, talked to them for a while and even let you try their food.  I met a French (kind of shy); Japanese couple (the guy was funny yet friendly); American (we talked for a while as he was sitting with me when the train stops in the station); Chinese-Thai family (they let me and the American guy try their Rojak, it’s a food which is popular in Malaysia); and a Thai (he will be the one who will sleep in the upper deck, who is very talkative yet cannot speak and understand English.  We communicated through sign language and he always laughs at me.  Maybe he finds my sign language funny, lol.)

The train stops again, in Hat Yai station (pronounced as Had Jai), this time at 8:30PM and departed at 12MN.  My American new-found friend alighted in Hat Yai and at around 10:00PM, the train staff set-up the sleeper for you with provided blanket, bed sheet and pillow.

You have to change your money to Baht in Malaysia, that is, before boarding the train to Thailand so that you can buy food inside the train.  Food cost at around 200Baht (USD6.60) in the train and you have to order in advance and they will serve it to you in Hat Yai station.  Don’t worry, there’s a waiter who will approach every passenger.  If you have food with you and you want to change your money in Thailand, then, it’s okay.  You can eat inside the train, too.  Take your lunch in Butterworth as the train will leave in the afternoon for Bangkok.

You cannot charge your empty battery inside the train so do charge your gadgets before you leave at your place.
